We are proud to say that Daphne’s Headcovers is the leading animal golf headcover business in the world. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Daphne’s Headcovers are sold in 75 countries. Honduras and Israel are among our newest locations. I was only 16 when together my mum, Daphne, the company’s namesake, and I founded the animal headcover business. We were making puppets and selling them all over the western U.S. at weekend arts and crafts shows, when a customer suggested the puppets might make great golf headcovers. “A silly idea,” we thought,” but let’s give it a try.”
Somehow I managed to convince the folks at the Arizona Biltmore golf shop that our headcovers would be the next big thing, and we were launched. I couldn’t believe I had succeeded and sat in my car and cried afterwards.
Decades later, Daphne’s has become a trusted name in the golf industry. Golfers who carry a Daphne’s headcover—or several, which many do—know that every one carries a 100% lifetime guarantee. That’s how confident we are about our headcovers. Quality materials and fine workmanship ensure a durable product. Mum wouldn’t stand for anything but the best, and each headcover has her name on it. So it has to be right.
Mum retired in 1994 and passed away suddenly a year later. We are dedicated to following the high standards she set and never compromise our values. As we grew and expanded, I hired staff for all departments. One criterion I always apply when hiring is that people have to be kind. I strive for success, but not at the expense of basic human values. We have many employees who have been with us for decades.
Daphne’s has been fortunate to achieve consistent growth throughout the years. We introduce new lines and a new catalog every year. Golf accessories have been doing well overall as the economy recovers, and 2016 was a really successful year for Daphne’s. In 2017 we introduced six new designs: three special dogs, a roadrunner, and the talking David Feherty likeness, which created waves at the PGA Show in Orlando.
In our experience, we continually find that no competitor is even close. They may undercut the price, but never the quality. Like many businesses, increasing costs and a lack of labor forced us to move some of our manufacturing to Indonesia and then to China. We can produce small custom orders at our headquarters in Phoenix, i.e. 150 at a time, but my ultimate goal would be to “come home” to Phoenix with all our manufacturing.
Customer is king
Excellent customer service goes with the Daphne’s name. It’s just who we are. Occasionally customers of many years send us tattered headcovers for which they have a sentimental attachment, hoping the lifetime guarantee can be invoked to repair or replace the item. We are happy to honor our promise. More than 200 PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour pros carry Daphne’s headcovers. When the pros come to town for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, I always ask if their headcovers need any work. At the 2017 event, we were able to straighten out the antennae on Padraig Harrington’s Ladybug headcover. Delighted to help!

ABOUT JANE SPICER
I was just a ten-year old kid who wanted a sailboat. I’m as surprised as anyone else to find myself the CEO of an international company. It’s all because of my mum, Daphne, our company’s namesake. Together we were working on making and selling puppets all over the western U.S., when a “silly idea” got us into the business of animal golf headcovers. We were off and running. I loved it. Along the way, I earned the money for the sailboat. I have to say, the excitement of building our company alongside my partner and mentor, my mum, forced the sailboat to the back of my mind for awhile. Now it’s been 38 years, and I’ve been running Daphne’s alone for more than two-thirds of that time. She taught me well.
As a true Arizona native, I love sunsets and saguaros. One of our newest headcovers is a Roadrunner, another native of the Southwest. Daphne’s is a home-grown Arizona company, although we are now represented in 75 countries. Our Phoenix headquarters contains a warehouse and manufacturing base, so I get to be involved, “hands-on,” with some of our production.
We started with animal headcovers. Our Best Sellers include The Golden Retriever, The Gopher, and of course, The Tiger. Tiger Woods’ mother gave him that headcover, and it put Daphne’s on the map. The “Just For Fun” headcovers came later, like The Pirate and The Ninja. We are always moving forward, looking ahead and creating new designs.
There is no school I know of that offers a degree in Entrepreneurship. I just learned “on the job,” from the mistakes I made along the way and the challenges I encountered. There were plenty of both. Being a 16 year-old girl selling a new product to what could affectionately be referred to as the “old boys club” presented challenges every day. But I knew we had a quality product and a niche in the golf business that no one else occupied. We believed totally in what we were doing, and still do, and work tirelessly to be the best that we can be. Golf is still a male-dominated industry, with few other female CEO’s, but our success has made that situation less significant.
I have always felt that with success comes responsibility. Along the way I seem to have become something of a role model for young entrepreneurs, especially women. It is a great pleasure for me to serve as a mentor and help them succeed in whatever their passion may be.
I stumbled a bit, actually a lot, when my mum passed way suddenly. All the responsibility was suddenly on my shoulders. Somehow the company survived and even thrived, and so did my children. Let’s just say I learned a few things about life-work balance. I truly enjoy hiking our wonderful trails in Arizona. Family time is precious with my two children and our various rescue animals.
One of the things I love about Daphne’s is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. How can you, surrounded by the silly Gopher, the crazy Monkey Made of Sockies, and those lovable pups? Friends often ask me, “What’s in your Inbox today?” It could be an urgent request for unicorn headcovers to be delivered to the Phoenix Open, or a note from a long-time customer asking us to restore a beloved yet bedraggled headcover.
